American Eskimo Dog
 |
The American Eskimo Dog is a loyal companion dog - who, despite the name, has nothing to do with any Eskimo tribe and never served as a sled dog. The name was given to help differentiate it from its German ancestors and also partly because of a surge of patriotism in the post World War II years. It is derived from the Spitz variety of dog, characterize by long fur, pointed ears and muzzles. They are highly intelligent and easy to train, which led to their frequent use as circus acts in the early 1900s. American Eskimo Dogs have a reputation of getting along very well with children.
