Chesapeake Bay Retriever

Chesapeake Bay Retriever The ancestry of the Chesapeake Bay Retriever is well documented. Two Newfoundland puppies (a male and female) were rescued from an English shipwreck off the coast of Maryland in 1807. Families that sheltered the English sailors received the puppies as a gift and bred them with local dogs such as the Otterhound and Retrievers. The resulting breed had swimming abilities of the Newfoundland combined with the retrieving abilities of the local dogs. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever needs plenty of room to roam and requires ample exercise. It has a wavy, oily coat that needs frequent brushing and can produce an odor. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a good tempered dog with a happy disposition. In fact, the "Chessies" as they're lovingly nicknamed, can even seem to "smile" by baring their teeth.
