Irish Wolfhound
|
The Irish Wolfhound is a sight hound whose name is derived from its purpose (wolf hunting)
rather than from its appearance. An ancient breed of the greyhound family, the Irish
Wolfhound was used to hunt wolves and elk and to accompany Irish nobles to war. Even though
this original purpose is no longer valid, the instincts originally developed for the chase
are still very much a part of the modern hounds, so proper fencing is important. Irish
Wolfhounds are some of the tallest dog breeds, they are sweet-tempered, patient, generous,
and get along well with children. Dignified and willing, they are unconditionally loyal to
their owner and family. Irish Wolfhounds are highly sensitive, requiring a positive
environment, encouraging attitude and non-overbearing training methods. Their astonishing
size, speed, and intelligence made them ideal animals for both boar hunting and wolf hunting,
and many were exported for this purpose. The Irish Wolfhound has been recorded as being
exhibited in ancient Rome to some excitement, and mention is made that they so amazed and
terrified the Romans that it was seen fit to only transport them in cages. There exist
stories that in the arena, the original Wolfhound was the equal of a lion. There are reports
of Irish Wolfhounds chasing away lions in Africa. In that case, the dogs were greater in
number and the lions were most likely shy exemplars, afraid of men. |

Pagan the Irish Wolfhound
Sent in by Barbara K. — United Kingdom (Great Britain)
I have sent you a photo of my adorable young wolfhound "Pagan", she is the love of my life and my constant companion. She is a show stopper, whenever we go on a trip anywhere I have to allow loads of extra time due to the amount of people that want to stop and talk to us. `Pagan is loving, funny, and even though she has destroyed my garden, and quite a bit of my furniture, I could not imagine life without her.
