Plott Hound
The Plott Hound is the official state dog of North Carolina, the birthplace of the breed. The Plott Hound is said to be the only American hound without British ancestry. The breed's name honors its American founders, seven generations of the Jonathan Plott family, beginning in the 1750's, bred their dogs exclusively within the family. The breed is said to have originated from bloodhounds and curs. The dog's working claim to fame is coldtrailing bear and raccoons in the Appalachian, Blue Ridge, and Great Smoky Mountains of the Eastern United States. They are extremely hardy and have superior hunting instincts. The breed has been carefully developed to be stronger and more persistent. They can make a good family companion but are seldom kept as one. Most people get these dogs for the hunt.

Our first dog is a Plott Hound

We have a year old plott hound that we love. We live in northern new jersey and she loves all of the seasons! She wanted walks in the cold rain and wanted to run and jump in the snow. Now that it is spring/summer she is outside all the time. She very much loves running around in the backyard and treeing squirrels. She gets along well with our cats, although she can be a bit exhuberant with them at times! Especially wen they run, as she loves to chase. The cats are not allowed outside and the dog will run over and herd them back into the house if they try to sneak out when we are in the yard. She is quick learner and almost seems to enjoy humans more than other dogs, making sure to check out every person at the dog park too. She is very spoiled and loves to be with us all the time. She has been an awesome first dog for me and my husband. She is a bit hesitant with small childern and needs a large amounts of exercise, but as long as she has her harness on she is a great jogging companion. One also needs to make sure there is a fence, since she can catch a scent and run very fast! Now we just need to decide when we are ready to get her another friend!
